Vocus Communications (ASX: VOC) has announced plans to extend its dark fibre service into North Sydney suburbs to improve connection speeds for customers.
The suburbs of Brookvale, Manly, Frenchs Forest and Cromer will be connected in early November following the laying of a 312 core submarine cable through Sydney’s middle harbour this week. The cable is made up of 312 optical fibres in a water proof tube.
According to Vocus, its customer Network Ten may expand its use of fibre links following the rollout as it has begun broadcasting a new breakfast program called Wake Up from Manly.
Vocus CEO James Spenceley said the fibre run covers a distance of 20 kilometres and was extended due to customer demand.
In June 2012, the company laid two fibre cable links in Sydney Harbour as part of a strategy to decrease connection latencies between Sydney’s central business district and the ASX data centre in Gore Hill.
Last month, Vocus began offering a service called Cloud Connect which connects customers to Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Sydney via its optical fibre network.
Vocus customers can choose network speeds ranging from 50 megabits per second up to 10 gigabits per second. They can also use a dedicated physical port or a virtual port.
