NT govt department in mainframe refresh

Will deploy new IBM zEnterprise BC12 mainframe

The North Territory government's Department of Corporate and Information Services (DCIS) will soon be one of the first organisations in the world to deploy IBM zEnterprise BC12 mainframe, as part of its four-year IT system refresh.

The department manages several core government systems, including accounting, personnel and vehicle registration applications.

DCIS director data centre services Scott Thomson said department needed a mainframe that could easily scale but also be cost-effective.

“With significant and rising transaction volumes across the department, our infrastructure needs to enable fast, reliable access to data which can drive down costs while also improving levels of service,” Thomson said in a statement.

“Taking an early-adopter approach to technology has always been a priority for DCIS, particularly given our portfolio’s focus on immediate and reliable transfers of often-sensitive information.”

The department had trialled the zBC12 mainframe before deciding to adopt the technology.

“We’re confident that its significant advancements will contribute not only to our internal efficiencies, but to the quality of support we can deliver to the agencies that rely on us,” Thomson said.

DCIS also has a 30-year history with IBM supplying mainframes to the department. Thomson said the department’s business-critical platforms run on IBM platforms.

“As a system designed for a myriad of applications across cloud, mobility, and business analytics, the zBC12 offers everything the DCIS requires to generate further efficiency dividends through ongoing innovations across its data-centric service portfolio,” added Andreas Wenzel, IBM Systems and Technology Group.
