Australia Japan Cable has expanded capacity on its submarine cable connecting Australia, Guam and Japan.
AJC — a consortium that includes Telstra, AT&T, NTT, Verizon and Softbank — has deployed an optical transport network platform by Infinera on its 12,700 km submarine fibre optic cable network, allowing the delivery of 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) services over the cable.
The upgrade provides AJC a mesh network of 500 Gbps super channels with soft-decision forward error correction. The network can be upgraded in the future to support 1 Tbps channels, Infinera said.
“To meet the growing bandwidth needs of carrier, enterprise and ISP customers, AJC is significantly increasing the capacity of our network,” Philip Murphy, AJC head of engineering, said in a statement.
“We selected an Infinera Intelligent Transport Network because it allowed us to scale capacity while simplifying operations.”
The announcement follows major submarine cable upgrades announced last year by Southern Cross Cable Network and Australia’s Academic and Research Network (AARNet).
Also last year, Telstra, Vodafone and Telecom NZ announced a new submarine cable between Auckland and Sydney.
