State government agency Land and Property Information has launched a new initiative that lets users explore NSW geospatial datasets from within Google Earth.
LPI's Google Earth-based project lets users enable information overlays within Google Earth. The project is dubbed "NSW Globe".
"The tool allows users to find out more about their property or local area, and provides access to historical information including aerial photographs of Sydney from the 1940s, as well as flood maps from places like Bourke, Moree and Wagga," NSW minister for finance and services Andrew Constance said in a statement.

NSW Globe includes medium and high resolution aerial and satellite imagery from government and private sources, terrain data, historic images, boundary information, including suburbs and electorate information, roads and rail routes, and addresses.
LPI is also intending to launch another project that will "enable access to full GIS capabilities without the need to be a GIS professional". "That will allow complex business problems to be visualised via spatial information," a media statement said.
In November, the NSW government introduced a policy of "open by default" for government datasets.
