Updated: DSTO and IBM to collaborate on defence tech

Both organisations will carry out research on cyber security, analytics and cognitive computing

The Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) and IBM Australia have joined forces to conduct research on defence technologies in areas such as cyber security, analytics and cognitive computing.

Chief defence scientist Dr Alex Zelinsky and director, IBM Research, Australia Glenn Wightwick signed an agreement on Monday to research technology capabilities that could improve operations in the Australian Defence Force.

A Defence spokesperson said the agreement will be for five years, and is a new alliance between the two organisations.

"Areas for collaborative research remain to be worked out in detail, but some options might include analysing big data in the cyber security space, intelligent use of computing power, and smart sensors for detecting viruses to prevent bioterrorism and other epidemics," said the spokesperson.

"Collaboration and commercialisation are likely outcomes of alliances. However, these activities would be separate arrangements and subject to broader departmental considerations and Commonwealth policies."

Dr Zelinsky said these areas of research are "very promising" and "both organisations have deep expertise in these areas".

“IBM has a long history of driving innovation – from the invention of the barcode to the creation of cognitive computing systems that learn and interact naturally with people to extend what either humans or machine could do on their own. Our researchers push the boundaries of science and technology to make the world work better,” Wightwick added.
