Telstra deploys new routers

Telstra has moved to deploy new gigabit switch routers across its Internet Protocol (IP) network to accommodate exponential traffic growth.

Telstra's Internet and data products chief technologist, Geoff Huston said the Cisco 12000 GSR routers would be used to support IP over synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) at 155Mbit/sec.

These would be used to help transport the network's existing load of 2Tbytes per day, a load likely to grow rapidly given the global doubling of Internet traffic year on year.

The 12000-series would be used to complement the existing Cisco 7500 series now in use within the Big Pond Internet network, Huston said.
