Amazon brings cloud-based virtual desktops to Australia

WorkSpaces VDI service gets price bump in Sydney region

Amazon's virtual-desktops-as-a-service offering is now available in the cloud giant's Sydney region. Amazon WorkSpaces provides Windows 7-based virtual desktops served out of AWS' data centres for a monthly fee.

Sydney is the fourth region to get WorkSpaces, joining US East (North Virginia), US West (Oregon) and EU (Ireland).

The cloud provider initially unveiled its 'desktop-as-a-service' in November last year, with the service becoming generally available to AWS customers in March this year.

AWS offers clients for Windows, Mac, Android tablets and the iPad and the service supports Active Directory Integration. The service starts at US$45 a month for an entry level virtual desktop served from the Sydney region, compared to US$35 for a desktop from a US region.

Workspaces has four tiers: Standard (one virtual CPU, 3.75GB of memory and 50GB or storage with a small selection of applications preinstalled); Standard Plus, which has the same specs but includes security software and Microsoft Office Professional 2010; Performance, which has two vCPUs, 7.5GB of RAM, 100GB of storage and the same applications as Standard; and Performance Plus which adds Office Professional 2010 and Trend Micro Worry-Free Business Security Services to the Performance desktop.

Served from the Sydney region the virtual desktops cost US$35, US$50, US$60 and US$75 each per month, respectively.

Amazon Web Services unveiled the Sydney region in in late 2012. Last year AWS launched a local support operation.

The public cloud provider has progressively added support for more of its suite of services to the Sydney region.
