Netflix has warned to treat reports of it entering Australia as speculation.
“We haven’t announced any plans to go to ANZ,” a Netflix spokesman told Computerworld Australia.
Buzz about Netflix’s possible entrance increased after The Australian yesterday published an unattributed report that the streaming service is considering an official launch in Australia next year.
“Media speculation,” remarked the Netflix spokesman.
While Netflix has not announced plans for Australia, it has said it continues to explore a number of international markets.
On its investor relations page, Netflix explains that it evaluates international markets based on broadband infrastructure, including speeds, number of households and projected growth; content availability and cost; entertainment consumption and consumer interest; the competitive landscape; and e-commerce maturity.
However, that hasn't stopped many Australians from accessing the US Netflix site using a VPN.
Meanwhile, Foxtel and others in Australia are rolling out their own streaming services that could compete with Netflix should it choose to enter the local market.
