Bigcommerce wins as Magento kills SMB offerings

Magento Go and Magento Prostores customers to be migrated to Bigcommerce platform

eBay subsidiary Magento will close down its Magento Go and ProStores platforms that provide online storefronts for small and medium businesses.

“As a business, we are focusing on our flagship products, Magento Enterprise Edition and Magento Community Edition, as well as developing the next generation of our platform, Magento 2,” read a statement from Magento.

The company will shut down Go and ProStores on 1 February next year. Magento will provide customer service until that time, the statement said.

Magento will help customers transition to Australian startup Bigcommerce, which offers a subscription-based ecommerce platform.

“For Magento Go and ProStores merchants who aren’t the right fit for Magento Enterprise Edition or Magento Community Edition, we are working with Bigcommerce to provide subscription-based SaaS plans similar to what these merchants are used to. Merchants can also choose to migrate to other eCommerce providers,” the Magento statement said.

There are some 10,000 Magento Go and Magento ProStores users.

“Throughout this transition period, we will fully support both ProStores and Go, and clients will receive the same level of customer service they’ve come to expect,” said eBay Enterprise senior vice-president, product and strategy, Mark Lavelle.

Magento has created online resources to aid customers in the migration.

“We are prepared and excited to work with ProStores and Magento Go merchants to help them continue their success using the Bigcommerce platform,” said Bigcommerce’s CEO, Eddie Machalaani, in a statement.

According to Bigcommerce, more than 6000 ProStores customers have previously been migrated to the startup’s platform.
