Amplify.net introduces new security tools

Amplify.net is introducing two appliances that support a firewall, VPN and load balancing for sites with more than one connection to the Internet.

Called the iSurfJanus CX and iSurfJanus DX, each box comes in two models, one with and one without VPN capabilities.

Both have two 10/100 Etherenet ports for connecting to WAN routers and single ports for connecting to the LAN. The difference between the two models is in throughput: the CX supports 10M bit/sec downloads and 4M bit/sec uploads, while the DX supports 30M bit/sec in both directions.

Amplify.net says the CX is designed for sites that are supported by dual ADSL connections while the DX is for sites that have two fiber connections to the Internet.

Whether customers would buy one of these devices or instead opt for multiple devices that together perform the same functions depends on how they weigh reliability against cost, says Ron Westfall, an analyst with Current Analysis Inc. Multiple functions in one box mean more is lost if the device fails, he says. On the other hand, buying an appliance with multiple functions can mean significantly reduced initial outlay for gear, he says.

Internet hosting company Boldfocus uses the CX just for load balancing between two T-1s that connect the company's data center to two different UUNet points of presence. The company already had a firewall, says Boldfocus president Jonathan Lui Kwan, but found that Amplify.net's price made it more cost effective than other load balancing equipment.

Amplify.net says its VPN software is interoperable with VPN gateways made by Check Point, Cisco, NetScreen and WatchGuard.

Future releases of the devices will include traffic shaping so customers can give certain applications priority. The company already makes stand-alone traffic shaping gear. Future releases will also support dialup VPN clients.

The CX costs US$1,000 without VPN and $1,500 with it. The DX costs $1,100 without and $1,700 with VPN. Both are available now.
