Telstra reveals private cloud offering

Telco will use VCE’s Vblock to deliver on-premise and off-premise private cloud to customers

Telstra’s cloud chief, Erez Yarkoni, has announced the telco will deliver managed private cloud to customers via VCE’s Vblock.

“We’re announcing Vblock as our go to market private cloud solution,” Yarkoni told the EMC Forum in Sydney. Vblock is a converged infrastructure system from VCE, a joint venture between EMC, VMware, and Cisco.

“What we’re giving our customers is either on-prem or off-prem, fully managed private cloud solution by Telstra,” Yarkoni said.

“Telstra is the service management component that allows you to consume it, and our partners deliver all the richness of the technology management and of course the R&D, the software and hardware and so on, that makes it a valuable component in your private cloud story.”

Yarkoni said that although he was making the official Vblock announcement today, the telco had been taking it to market for several weeks.

Telstra’s cloud vision involves multiple infrastructures, Yarkoni said, linked together by Telstra’s network and an orchestration service/service management tool from the telco. “Such that, as a customer... first of all you can have one identity and a choice of multiple tools and infrastructures. You can get one bill from it, you can control the consumption.

“In that orchestration [service] there will be a marketplace so we will bring applications with our partners into that marketplace, but you can [also] bring your own [applications] into that environment... and if you package it all together you get the Telstra cloud proposition.”

Telstra’s orchestration service is currently working “in alpha mode” on Cisco Cloud Services within the telco’s data centres. Telstra announced the CCS partnership earlier this year. Both internal and external customers are using the orchestration tool, and a beta is due next week.

“I hope that by the beginning of calendar year next there will be multiple infrastructures underneath,” Yarkoni said.
