NZ’s AO Cloud to expand into two Australian data centres

AO Cloud will use Vocus Communications facilities in Sydney and Melbourne

New Zealand cloud platform services provider AO Cloud is looking to establish a presence in two Australian data centres by December 2014 due to customer demand.

AO Cloud director Jeff Herbert told Computerworld Australia that Sydney and Melbourne are its first “two targets".

“We’ve got customers who are very keen for us to get a presence in Australia. It would also be beneficial for them to be connected on the same network between New Zealand and Australia,” he said.

AO Cloud currently has a presence in Auckland and Christchurch, NZ data centres owned by Vocus Communications (ASX: VOC).

“We chose them because of their Australian presence so we can leverage their trans-Tasman ability and their inter-state data centres,” said Herbert.

Vocus Communications operates data centres in Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne and Perth.

In August 2014, ASG Group (ASX: ASZ) announced plans to sell its Perth data centre to Vocus Communications for $11.7 million. This means Vocus will have two data centres in Perth once the acquisition is complete.

AO Cloud inked a deal with Brocade in 2013 and uses the vendor’s 10 Gigabit Ethernet (Gbe) VDX 6740 switches in its data centre hardware.

According to Herbert, it chose the switches because this removed the need to manually reconfigure network infrastructure. AO Cloud staff can focus on deploying and managing cloud services for customers.

“Our strategy has been to get the New Zealand operations running the way we want with the Brocade hardware as this forms the core network between data centres and customers. We are providing a number of services such as security event monitoring,” he said.
