Lenovo today announced its first 8-in., Intel-powered Android tablet, the Tab S8, which will go on sale later this month, starting at $199.
The S8 comes with an Intel Atom quad-core processor, clocked at 1.83 GHz, and the 8-in. display has 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution, according to Andrew Barrow, Lenovo's director of consumer product marketing and PCs, in a telephone briefing in advance of the IFA trade show in Berlin.
Lenovo ranks third in tablet shipments in the world and has been the top PC maker for 21 quarters in a row, company officials said. The company has also broken into the top four-largest smartphone suppliers globally, and is rumored to be launching new smartphones at IFA for sales in China and in other countries where it sells smartphones. Lenovo already sells more smartphones than PCs and is No. 1 in smartphone sales in China, where it is based.
Lenovo hasn't sold smartphones in the U.S., but hopes to by mid-2015. Lenovo's acquisition of smartphone maker Motorola Mobility from Google for $2.91 billion is expected to be finalized before the end of 2014, Lenovo spokesman Ray Gorman said.
The S8 weighs about 10.5 ounces and can be purchased with an LTE option. It features dual front-facing speakers, an 8-megapixel rear camera and 1.6 megapixel front-facing camera. It will ship in white, black, yellow or blue.
Lenovo also announced the Y70 gaming laptop with a 17.3-in. display that will have a starting price of $1,299 when sales start in September.
