New StarTech disk drive duplicator copies at 22GB per minute

StarTech's latest disk-to-disk drive duplicator, which ratchets up copying speeds almost three-fold compared to the previous model.

StarTech today released its latest disk duplicator, a standalone USB 3.0/eSATA docking station that offers the company's fastest sector-by-sector drive cloning to date.

The drive duplicator can copy data between two 2.5-in. or 3.5-in. SATA drives at about 400MBps -- or 22.2GB per minute. By comparison, StarTech's previous drive duplicator docking station transferred data at 150MBps.

The cloning device is hardware based and creates an exact sector-by-sector clone from one hard drive to another, including partitions and boot sector information -- providing consistency for sensitive operations such as data recovery.

The Duplicator can also be used as a high-speed drive dock when connected to a laptop or desktop computer through either USB 3.0 or eSATA cable.

"During our testing using two OCZ 120GB Vertex 3 Drives, we recorded an average speed of 378.88MBps or about 22.2 Gigabytes per minute as opposed to 5~8 GBpm of the older duplicators," a StarTech spokesperson said.

For example, a 1TB solid-state drive (SSD) could be duplicated in about 46 minutes, compared to about 2.5-3 hours on an older duplicator, the spokesperson said.

The new drive duplicator (model SDOCK2U33RE) is 5.8-in. x 5.2 in. x 2.8 in. has a retail price of $138.
