Digital entertainment network provider Cinenet will be one of the first tenants in Equinix’s new Melbourne data centre, ME1, when it opens in December 2014.
Founded in Adelaide during 2004, Cinenet is a collaboration between the founders of Rising Sun Pictures and Internet service provider Internode. The company was established to provide a shared infrastructure for studios, producers, editing facilities, visual effects providers, sound facilities and DVD producers to create and exchange large digital assets across Australia.
A number of Australian productions including The Great Gatsby and The Voice have used the network to transfer digital files.
According to Cinenet director Tony Clark, it will be investing $70,000 in network infrastructure at ME1.
Cinenet has been a Equinix data centre customer in Sydney since 2009. Clark said it chose to expand further with the data centre vendor because of the density of cloud service providers available on Platform Equinix.
“With this expansion, we will be able to connect with overseas cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services [AWS], Zettagrid and Engineroom.io,” he said.
Cinenet could partner with one of these cloud providers as it looks to expand into international entertainment markets such as Los Angeles in the United States, Clark added.
Located in Port Melbourne, the ME1 data centre will provide a capacity of 1,500 cabinets, with the first phase of 375 cabinets scheduled for completion by December this year.
In September 2014, Telstra (ASX: TLS) announced it was establishing points of presence (PoPs) in Equinix’s SY3 Sydney and ME1 Melbourne data centres to deliver telco/media services to its customers who use Equinix’s facilities.
The partnership came about due to demand from Telstra’s enterprise and cloud provider customers for low latency content delivery in Australia.
