ANZ Banking Group is urging customers to delete an SMS message that claims unusual activity has been detected on their bank account.
The SMS says the following:
“Dear ANZ Bank customer, your account could be suspended. We urgently ask you to follow the account review link."
If clicked, the link re-directs customers to a fake ANZ Internet Banking website where they are asked to enter their ANZ Banking Group account login details.
“Under no circumstances should you click on the link or reply to the SMS. Always ensure that you only log on to ANZ Internet Banking by typing www.anz.com into the address bar, rather than following links provided to access the ANZ website. Disregard any emails or SMS’ that advise otherwise,” an ANZ Banking Group spokesperson said in a statement.
The SMS is identical to a text message that was sent to some National Australia Bank (NAB) customers in September 2014.
In August 2013, ANZ Banking Group customers were targeted with spam emails that claimed access to their account had been restricted.
The emails, which were referred to as 'callware' by Kaspersky Lab researchers, asked recipients to call a Sydney-based phone number included in the email to restore account access.
