Citrix develops mouse to make iPads, iPhones more Windows friendly

The mouse uses Citrix's Receiver client to interact with remote Windows apps

Citrix Systems is working on a mouse to simplify the use of remote Windows apps on Apple's tablets and smartphones.

Since many Windows business apps haven't been ported natively to iOS, enterprises use Citrix software, which lets them run on a server instead of directly on the device.

Unfortunately, Apple doesn't allow the use of physical mice on iPads, and virtual mice aren't ideal. Enter Citrix's X1 prototype mouse, unveiled at the company's Summit conference this week.

For the mouse to work, the R1 version of Citrix's Receiver client has to be installed on the iPad or iPhone. The client is what makes it possible to access remote apps and desktops. The mouse movements are sent to Receiver, which passes them along to the server.

For now, Citrix is handpicking X1 users, which isn't too surprising since the product is still a prototype. People who think the mouse sounds like a good idea can request a demo or take part in a giveaway of an undisclosed number of units. Availability of the prototype is limited.

Håkan Andersson, CEO at AceIQ, a consultant that specializes in Citrix, hopes to take part in the giveaway.

"There are more and more people who only have an iPad with them, and when you work for bit longer a real mouse is needed. It makes you more effective," he said.

Andersson hopes the launch of the mouse isn't just a test but something that'll become a real product, maybe in time for Citrix's Synergy conference in May.
