NSW government adds new cloud services to catalogue

GovDC Cloud Connect offers a secure way for agencies to access public cloud services

An application to help government agencies manage contractors, a SaaS enterprise resource planning (ERP) platform, and an expense management system are three new cloud offerings available to NSW government agencies.

The state's finance minister, Dominic Perrottet, today announced the three offerings had been added to the government's catalogue of cloud services delivered at the government's GovDC data centres in Silverwater and Unanderra.

"Cloud computing means that we use technology products only as we need them, rather than owning and maintaining them," the minister said in a statement.

"More cloud services means reduced risk, reduced cost and reduced red tape for agencies and suppliers."

"Conceptually, agencies can pick a product from the ICT Catalogue and add it to their shopping cart," Perrottet said.

"This approach to ICT means agencies can implement systems quicker and cheaper than before."

The cloud-based contingent workforce vendor management system, which is designed to help government agencies manage contractors, went live at the Department of Family and Communities in November.

The Department of Education and Communities will implement the system during the first quarter this year, the minister said.

The minister also said that a 'Cloud Connect' service is being offered through GovDC. The service will allow agencies housed in GovDC to securely access public cloud services such as Amazon Web Services and Rackspace.

GovDC is a product of a government data centre consolidation program, shifting agencies from some 130 data centres to two. All agencies are mandated to migrate to GovDC by August 2017.

In September 2013 the NSW government announced it would push agencies to increase their use of cloud services.
