New .sydney domain open for registrations tomorrow

gTLD generally available from 17 February

From 11am on 17 February, the new .sydney top-level domain will hit general availability.

"The government invested in .sydney to provide the New South Wales business community with a long-term digital asset that will create a platform for innovation and ensure the continued development of the digital economy across the state," NSW finance and services minister Dominic Perrottet said in a statement.

BridgeClimb Sydney, What’s On Sydney, Sydney Fish Market and Luna Park have been named 'ambassadors' for the new TLD.

The domain will be managed by ARI Registry Services.

ARI has released a registration policy for the TLD that sets out which groups and individuals are eligible for .sydney domains.

Registration is restricted to residents of New South Wales, businesses with an address in NSW, and 'associated entities' that provide services or products in the state.

ARI’s CEO, Adrian Kinderis, has said that tourism will help drive .sydney registrations.

“I think the Internet is a big help for the tourism industry, so [operators] will look to something like .sydney to be able to differentiate themselves and call them specifically 'something.sydney',” Kinderis said.

The .melbourne domain went live late last year.

The new generic top-level domains are part of a significant expansion of the Internet's Domain Name System, overseen by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
