Department of Social Services migrates Drupal sites to govCMS

DSS shifts five Drupal-based sites to whole-of-government content-management system

The Department of Social Services has migrated its Drupal-based websites to the cloud-hosted, whole-of-government content-management system, govCMS.

The websites of the department and its ministers, and the Guides to Social Policy Law, Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations the National Disability Insurance Scheme websites have been moved to the new platform.

Although the sites were moved to the cloud-hosted service as part of an early adopter scheme, a govCMS blog entry reporting the transition said that they have not yet been moved to the govCMS distribution, which is based on the aGov Drupal distribution.

govCMS is due to officially go live this month, with its website currently still listing it as being in beta.

Australia.gov.au was the first site to go live on the new CMS. The site, which receives some 2 million visitors per month, was followed by Finance.gov.au.

govCMS is available an as-a-service option for federal government agencies and migration to the platform is not mandatory.

"We think it provides a very useful service for agencies — one that addresses their need to have cost-effective web hosting [and] cost-effective content management," the Australian government chief technology officer, John Sheridan, said last year.

The service is designed for "informational government websites" that don't deal with sensitive or personal data, Sheridan said.

govCMS is delivered under a contract with Boston-headquartered firm Acquia. Acquia was was founded by Dries Buytaert, who created the open source Drupal project govCMS is built atop of.
