Exchange problem slows Telstra mobile data speeds

Problem affected about 50 per cent of Telstra mobile customers in the state

Half of Telstra mobile customers living across New South Wales suffered slow data speeds this morning due to a problem at one of the telco’s exchanges.

About 50 per cent of 2G, 3G and 4G customers in the state experienced slower speeds than usual, a Telstra spokesperson said. Telstra became aware of the problem at 9am and resolved the matter at 11.45am, she said.

“The slow speeds were caused by a network element at the Haymarket Exchange, which handles all network data requests,” the spokesperson said.

“We apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused and thank them for their patience.”

Telstra, along with other telcos, last reported an outage in late February as a result of the tropical cyclone in Queensland.

Telstra earlier this week at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona announced a roadmap for upgrading its wireless services, including a long-term plan to adopt 5G services.
