The NSW Information and Privacy Commission (IPC) has unveiled an e-learning portal to help organisations in the state deal with privacy complaint handling and other privacy issues.
The e-learning portal is free and currently provides access to two e-learning modules- privacy complaint handling and Government Information Public Access (GIPA) Act: Access training for decision makers.
According to NSW Attorney General Brad Hazzard, the two e-learning modules will help the community understand the systems they can use under the GIPA Act to access government information and protect their personal information under the <i>Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998.
More modules and educational tools will be uploaded to the e-learning portal later in 2015.
The launch of the portal follows comments by NSW Privacy Commissioner Doctor Elizabeth Coombs that more organisations in the state need to establish a culture of privacy and risk management.
Speaking at an International Association of Privacy Professionals Australia and New Zealand (iaapANZ) seminar in Sydney last month, Coombs told delegates that some organisations she visits don’t see privacy as a high priority.
“Something I put to all organisations is the role of leadership when it comes to privacy, particularly of the CEO and senior management. If the CEO doesn't view it as an interest, rarely does that percolate down within an organisation,” she said.
Coombs said CEOs should be asking questions such as: “Is privacy management included in the internal audit and risk program? Does the audit and risk committee get reports about privacy management?”
