NBN Co launches FTTB offering

Fibre-to-the-basement product goes lives

NBN Co has formally launched its fibre to the basement (FTTB) product, the company announced early this morning.

Along with fibre to the node (FTTN) and hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC), as well as fibre to the premises (FTTP) in some areas, FTTB is a major component of the government's 'multi-technology' approach to rolling out the National Broadband Network.

FTTB is being rolled out to 6000 premises in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra.

In January NBN Co announced 43 apartment blocks in in the ACT, New South Wales and Victoria would be the first to receive NBN Co's fibre-to-the-basement services.

The first suburbs targeted for NBN FTTB services are in Canberra; Brunswick and Brunswick East, Carlton, Keysborough, and Parkville in Melbourne; and central Sydney as well as Woolloomooloo, Darlinghurst, Rushcutters Bay, Elizabeth Bay, Potts Point, Balmain, Pyrmont, Randwick, Erskineville, Mascot, Alexandria and St Leonards.

Previously, NBN Co struggled with the challenge of rolling out FTTP to so-called multi-dwelling units (MDUs). FTTB services don't require running new cables to individual premises in MDUs.

Instead, the existing telephone wires are used.

NBN Co trials of FTTB services have achieved average end user download speeds on vectored VDSL of 89 megabits per second, and average upload speeds of 36Mbps.

"Eliminating the need for individual building designs and in-building wiring cuts down on construction time," NBN Co’s chief customer officer, John Simon, said.

"Removing the need to install new equipment in the home accelerates the ability of people to connect." NBN Co remains on track for a Q3 launch of FTTN services, Simon said.

In February NBN Co announced that in 2014 it had doubled both the number of serviceable premises and premises activated on the network to more than 749,000 and 322,000, respectively, compared to the year before.
