Widespread outages hit Windows 8/8.1 Metro Mail, Windows Live Mail, Windows Phone 8.1 mail

Microsoft confirms that the mail has been experiencing problems for at least six hours

Last night at about 12:30 a.m. EDT, Microsoft issued a bulletin warning of widespread outages for Windows 8 and 8.1 Metro Mail, Windows Live Mail, and Windows Phone 8.1 mail. The bulletin stated:

There's a problem with Outlook.com right now.

We are aware that users of the following mail clients are experiencing issues syncing and sending email. We are working on the issue and expect resolution in the next 24 hours. - Windows Live Mail - Outlook Connector - MSN Premium client. - Windows Phone 8.1 - Windows 8 Mail Client

This morning, at about 5:00 a.m. EDT, Microsoft issued an update:

Fixing the problem is taking longer than we hoped. We'll provide an update by April 08 4:00 AM. We apologize for the lengthy interruption in service.

Presumably that's 4:00 a.m. Redmond time, and 7:00 a.m.for those of us on the right coast.

Although the service status advisory mentions Outlook.com, as of 6:30 a.m. EDT, I had no problem signing into, sending or receiving mail at Outlook.com. However, when I tried to send mail with the Windows 8.1 Metro Mail program, I received this message:

There's a problem sending messages from (Microsoft account) right now. Check with your provider for more info.

Of course, my Internet service provider is fine. It's Metro Mail that's gone out to lunch.
