Budget includes funding for secondary computing facility

The Northern Territory government's budget for 2015-16, handed down today, includes funding for a number of IT initiatives. Among them is funding a second data centre facility for government.

2015-16 budget documents note the allocation of $3 million for Data Centre Services (DCS) to "establish computing capability at a secondary facility to strengthen resilience of ICT services across government".

DCS operates the government's Chan Data Centre.

In addition the agency has been allocated $1 million to refresh mainframe computing infrastructure, $1 million for upgrading storage and $300,000 for server virtualization.

In 2014-15 DCS managed 1000 servers, including 600 in the Chan Data Centre, and some 1900TB of SAN storage

The Department of Corporate and Information Services had $9 million over three years earmarked for a program to expand mobile phone and broadband services in remote areas. The program is being carried out in partnership with Telstra.

DCIS was also allocated $12.5 million over three years to deliver the ASNEX asset management project.
