Fujitsu to spend $10m on Perth data centre upgrade

Vendor gunning for Tier IV certification

Fujitsu Australia will invest $10 million in upgrading its Perth data centre to Tier IV certification.

The Uptime Institute certification stipulates how data centre sites are to be designed and operated to tolerate the impact of every site infrastructure component, system and distribution path.

The certification will be completed within the next 18 months.

According to the vendor, there are no data centres currently certified to Tier IV in Australia.

Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand CEO Mike Foster said the certification will provide “unprecedented guarantees” of availability for all businesses that rely on cloud-based data.

“Those data centres governed by Tier IV standards will give customers even greater confidence to move more mission-critical applications into ‘always on’ cloud infrastructure. Organisations are increasingly demanding a level of security and availability beyond the level of existing Tier III facilities for their mission-critical systems and applications,” he said in a statement.

The investment forms part of a 2025 roadmap for the vendor’s Oceania region data centre network. The roadmap is designed to maximise performance, reliability, data security and sustainability at its facilities in the region.

Two of the vendor’s three data centres in Sydney were recently assessed for the National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) for data centres.

The facility in Homebush Bay was awarded a 3.5 star rating in November 2014. Meanwhile, the vendor’s Western Sydney data centre received 4 stars in December last year.

Fujitsu operates seven data centres in Australia.
