ASG spruiks Department of Communications cloud contract win

The Department of Communications has signed a five-year, $18 million contact with the IT services provider

The Department of Communications' $18 million contract to adopt ASG's secure government cloud platform "further cements ASG’s foothold in the Federal Government market," the IT services provider said in a statement issued this morning

ASG said the five-year contract with the department would open opportunities for other federal agencies to adopt the 'New World Secure Government Cloud Service'.

The move to the consumption-based model for IT services "is an example of this department being a leader in innovation by being the first to adopt this technology," the department's secretary, Drew Clarke, said.

In October the government unveiled a 'cloud-first' policy for agencies.

Under the policy, agencies are required ICT refresh points as a trigger for evaluating cloud services. Agencies must adopt public cloud for test and dev and Web hosting, evaluate "private, community, public or hybrid cloud services for operational systems", and look for opportunities for cross-agency cloud services.

Increasing the use of cloud services will not only deliver efficiencies for the government but will have a 'flow-on' effect on the private sector. Government aversion to cloud services could reduce adoption in the private sector, the policy said.

The government revealed earlier this year the initial suppliers on its cloud services panel.

The Australian Signals Directorate, which provides security guidance to government agencies, recently updated its Information Security Manual. Changes to the updated ISM are meant to bring it into line with the government's cloud-first policy settings.

The ASD also recently launched Certified Cloud Services List (CCSL). The list is designed to ease the path to cloud adoption by certifying that the listed cloud services meet certain ASD standards.

So far cloud services from Microsoft, Amazon Web Services and, most recently, Macquarie Telecom have been added to the list.
