NBN hits the million mark

National Broadband Network now available to more than a million premises

The National Broadband Network is now available to more than a million premises, the government announced today.

As of this week, there were 1,011,973 premises able to order NBN services.

Of those, 571,517 are brownfields able to order fixed line services, some 180,796 are premises in greenfields areas included in the network's fixed line footprint, and 220,917 are able to order fixed wireless services.

In addition, 38,743 premises have connected to the network via NBN's Interim Satellite Service

"If we included all premises which were in precincts which were ready for service it would be high because about another 10 per cent of them cannot get a service when they ring up for various reasons," Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull told a press conference.

In areas where fixed line services have been rolled out, over the last 18 months unserviceable premises have dropped from 31 per cent to 10 per cent.

NBN revealed in its Q3 results last month that 389,000 services had been activated on the network.

NBN CEO Bill Morrow told a Senate Estimates hearing last week that 12,000 premises are being made serviceable every week.

"That is an increase of 71 per cent on the run rate from just nine months ago," Morrow said at the 28 May hearing

"We have, therefore, seen a substantial increase in the serviceable premises and users and revenues in the nine months to 31 March 2015...

"The number of premises with an active NBN service grew by 134 per cent to 389,000. Cumulative telecommunications revenue for the period exceeded $100 million, which is an increase of 179 per cent.

"Let me put that last point into context. In just three quarters we have earnt more in revenue than the company has been able to accrue in the entire previous four years of its existence. While these numbers are welcome, they are, of course, modest against the cost of construction."
