Smartwatch maker Pebble will start manufacturing its new Pebble Time Steel this week and begin shipping the device at the end of this month.

People who backed the smartwatch's crowdfunding campaign early on will have theirs shipped out the last week of July, the company said. People who contributed later will receive shipping information by the end of August.

"The delivery timeframe for Pebble Time Steel rewards is a little off from the original estimate we shared during the campaign, but well get everything shipped as fast as possible," the company said.

Back in March, Pebble said the smartwatch would ship in July. Presumably it hoped to get the smartwatch to customers early in the month.

The Pebble Time Steel is the somewhat higher-end version of the original Time model. The Time Steel has a stainless steel casing and a battery that Pebble says lasts 10 days on a single charge, compared to seven days for the Time. Because of the longer battery life, the Time Steel is a millimeter thicker. Both watches work with an iPhone or Android smartphone and use Pebble's timeline interface.

For people who contributed to the crowdfunding campaign, the Time Steel comes with a metal and a leather strap. When the smartwatch is sold to the public, the metal band can be purchased as an accessory. However, not all backers will receive a metal band at the same time as their smartwatch, Pebble said. Due to a supplier issue, some people will receive a metal band in a separate shipment.

The Pebble Time Steel comes in silver, black and gold and will cost US$299 when it goes on sale to the public.

Pebble also said it has shipped 55,000 Time smartwatches, delivering nearly all of the 57,000 orders that were placed for the wearable during its own crowdfunding campaign, which launched in February and raised $20.3 million.
