Brisbane-based fintech company TSWG has launched an iOS and Android password management app that verifies a user’s identity by taking a snapshot of their eyes.
The eyeSafe app uses a smartphone's camera to record an eyeprint image and pattern matches the blood vessels in the whites of the eye.
The app can work even when people are wearing glasses and at night.
It employs a security solution dubbed 'Liveness Detection' which analyses eye motion. This means that if someone else tries to access the phone by using a still photo or a video of the user’s eyes, it won’t unlock.
According to US company EyeVerify, which developed the biometric technology used in the app, eye veins are unique to each human and offer better accuracy than a fingerprint scan as the eyeprint does not change from year to year.
TSWG’s customers include banks, credit unions, mutual banks and building societies.
A TSWG spokesperson said that an unnamed customer is in the process of integrating the technology into a mobile application that has been developed for them.
