Mobile subscribers boost Optus revenue

Telco adds 290,000 4G customers during quarter

Optus has reported an increase in operating revenue of 11 per cent to $2.30 billion for the quarter ending 30 June 2015.

This was up from $2.06 billion in the prior comparable period.

EBITDA for Q1 was $641 million, up from $597 million on the same quarter last year while net profit was $196 million, up from $164 million in 2014.

The telco reported mobile service revenue of $1.21 billion after adding of 38,000 postpaid customers. Optus has a total of 9.38 million mobile subscribers.

Optus added 290,000 new 4G subscribers in the quarter quarter. At the end of the period, Optus had 3.82 million 4G Plus customers which accounted for 41 per cent of its total mobile customer base.

Using the 700MHz spectrum, Optus has extended 4G coverage to more than 300 regional centres and now has almost 90 per cent population coverage.

“Since the beginning of 2015, we have switched on 700MHz spectrum at 2,400 metropolitan and regional sites. Over the coming year, Optus will continue this important investment program so thatmore Australians can have access to reliable, superfast 4G mobile services, in more places,” said Optus CEO Allen Lew.

Optus began last year switching on support for the 700MHz spectrum it won in the 2013 Digital Dividend auction.

In mass market fixed, operating revenue grew 3 per cent, driven by unlimited home broadband bundles and an increase in Optus’ NBN broadband customer base.

At the end of the quarter, Optus had 54,000 NBN broadband customers and a total of 1.04 million broadband customers.

Enterprise services

Optus' enterprise services revenue, including ICT, managed services and mobile revenue, grew 6 per cent from $367 million to $388 million.

Australian EBITDA grew 4 per cent from $71 million to $74 million.

However, with the weaker Australian dollar, Singtel's group enterprise revenue was flat at S$1.50 billion while EBITDA fell 2 per cent from S$491 million to S$483 million.

Singtel’s net profit was up 13 per cent to S$942 million. In the fourth quarter its net profit was S$939.

Earlier this year Singtel delisted from the ASX.
