SDN start-up PLUMgrid opens up on OpenStack

Supports more distributions of cloud framework; enhances software for microservices, visibility

SDN start-up PLUMgrid this week unveiled the latest version of its software for building OpenStack clouds.

Version 4.0 of PLUMgrid’s Open Networking Suite (ONS) for OpenStack supports multiple OpenStack distributions, Load Balancing as a Service (LBaaS) plugins, high availability and dynamic Tunnel Heatmap for improved visibility into physical and virtual layers.

Among the OpenStack distributions ONS 4.0 supports are Huawei Compass, Mirantis OpenStack, Rackspace Private Cloud, RDO, Red Hat OpenStack Platform, and Ubuntu OpenStack. ONS 4.0 has also achieved Red Hat certification with Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform 7, PLUMgrid says.

The LBaaS feature in ONS 4.0is interoperable with F5’s BIG-IPapplication delivery controllers through the LBaaS extensions in OpenStack’s Neutron API.LBaaS demand is increasing in data centers, PLUMgrid notes, with the growth of microservices for multitenant clouds, and the need to provide application and workload performance to all tenants.

For high availability and increased uptime, ONS 4.0 provides non-stop forwarding, auto recovery, and active/active/active redundancy for Neutron. This is designed to provide uninterrupted Neutron API service in multiple failure scenarios, and increase Neutron API service performance and availability across all OpenStack controller nodes.

The dynamic Tunnel Heatmap feature displays the real-time network status of the SDN overlay. It gives users a visual status of the overlay tunnels in the SDN layer plus the physical connectivity status between OpenStack compute nodes, PLUMgrid says. This is intended to allow cloud network operators to anticipate and respond to state changes of the OpenStack virtual and physical networks.

ONS 4.0 pricing starts at $500 per node per year. The Ubuntu OpenStack version is available today. RDO and RHEL OpenStack versions will be available in two weeks.

Tunnel Heatmap is included at no extra charge.
