Metronode data centres recognised for operational sustainability

Uptime Institute awards vendor for data centre design

Metronode has received Tier III operational sustainability gold certification from the Uptime Institute for its Silverwater and Illawarra data centres.

This means its two facilities meet international best practice certifications for data centre design and management.

According to Metronode CEO David Yuile, data centre industry certifications are becoming increasingly important, as more and more companies look to move data operations off site.

“Data centre growth is expected to double in 2015 and clients are demanding proof that facilities and operations are of the highest quality. Long-term reliability is imperative to daily operations and we wanted to ensure we measured our business practices against the highest global standards,” he said.

Metronode won a $182 million contractin May 2012 with the New South Wales government to build two Tier III facilities in Silverwater and Unanderra.

The data centres are being used by the NSW government as part of its Data Centre Reform Strategy. Under the strategy, NSW agencies will be required to move from 130 existing decentralised government data centres into the two whole-of-government purpose built facilities by 31 December 2015.

In August, Metronode announced plans to expand its Perth 2 data centre to cope with demand from the WA government, enterprise customers, system integrators and service providers.

At the time Yuile said the expansion, which will triple the current size, will be complete in early 2016. The vendor is spending $20 million on the expansion.

“The location and unique, future-proof design of Shenton Park is obviously meeting the stringent needs of our customers in WA and this has meant we needed to bring forward our expansion plans by about 12 months,” he said.

The Perth 2 facility opened in December 2013 at a cost of $30 million. It has a 2.8 megawatt capacity and power utilisation efficiency (PUE) of 1.17.
