Social media comment sparks UNSW security warning

Threat posted on anonymous message board 4Chan

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) has issued a security warning after threats were made via social media against the campus.

The message was posted on anonymous message board 4Chan yesterday.

It read:

“I finally managed to get a handgun. Australians, if you study at UNSW don’t go in tomorrow.”

An UNSW spokesperson said it was aware of a threat to the safety of staff and students on the Kensington campus.

“We are treating this incident seriously and have been liaising with the NSW Police through the anti-terrorism and security group and Local Area Command,” said the spokesperson.

“Police are advising this is a general, not a specific or direct threat.”

The spokesperson said the campus had not been evacuated and classes are continuing as normal.

“Those who would prefer to leave campus will not be penalised. UNSW will update staff and students when more information comes to hand.”

A NSW Police spokesperson confirmed it was investigating comments made on social media regarding UNSW.

“Police are working with the university regarding this matter, and will be at the facility throughout the day.”
