Telstra has neared speeds of 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) in mobile speed tests, the telco has revealed.
The telco earlier this year launched a Category 11 mobile broadband modem capable of a theoretical peak speed of 600 megabits per second over the Telstra 4G network.
Telstra also supports Category 9 handsets on its LTE network, delivering a peak speed of 450Mbps.
Today the telco's group managing director for networks, Mike Wright, revealed details of new tests that aggregated 100MHz spectrum across five separate channels on Telstra's commercial network.
During the tests peak speeds of 950Mbps were reached while employing a specialised speed testing application, Wright revealed in an entry on the telco's Exchange blog.
Using the same approach Telstra managed to hit end-to-end speeds of up to 843Mbps over the Internet.
"The demonstration of 1Gbps end to end capability shows the advanced state of these standards and our ability to rapidly bring them into commercial service in order to deliver increased capacity in our network to meet the growing demand," Wright wrote.
The telco still has more work to do before gigabit mobile speeds reach the market, Wright noted.
