No date yet for release of govt’s cyber-security review

Review had been due for release earlier this year

A date is yet to be set for the release of the government’s Cyber Security Review.

The review had been due to be released in mid-2015.

However, a blog entry posted by the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC), which is leading the review, revealed that there was as yet no date for release of the document.

“The Prime Minister recently met with the Department to discuss the Review,” the blog entry stated.

“He has taken a keen interest in the Review, including providing feedback which has been incorporated.”

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has not asked for a substantial rewrite of the review, the blog entry said.

A government-hosted a cyber security summit and follow-up roundtable focussed on developing a public cyber security strategy with business pushed back release of the review.

“The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet team leading the Cyber Security Review has been focused on developing a public Cyber Security Strategy while finalising the Review’s classified report,” the blog entry stated.

“The Strategy will reflect the Review’s findings and outline practical initiatives to promote security and growth online. In particular, the initiatives will boost collective efforts to build trust in Australia’s networks to ensure all Australians can make the most of the enormous economic and social potential cyberspace offers.”

Then prime minister Tony Abbott announced the review in November 2014.

Along with the DPMC, a panel of experts would aid the review, Abbott said. That panel would include Business Council CEO Jennifer Westacott; Cisco’s US CSO John Stewart; Telstra’s CISO Mike Burgess; and Dr Tobias Feakin, of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute’s International Cyber Policy Centre.
