Surfing Australia rides scheduling wave

Surf schools using software to manage roster shifts

Manual rosters and bespoke systems were the norm at Surfing Australia’s network of 120 surf and stand up paddle (SUP) schools around Australia until the organisation turned to cloud-based scheduling/payroll software.

Staff are using Ento’s SaaS offering to schedule staff and roster shifts.

Surfing Australia sports development manager Jim Hughes said it chose the software because it could integrate with the organisation’s Rezgo centralised booking platform for lessons and courses.

Surfing and SUP coaches can access shifts on their smartphone or iPad which means they don't need to make a call or drop in to the school to find out when they scheduled to work again.

“A lot of the surf schools were saying to us that we need a system that takes into consideration staff and coaches. If they have got a lesson with 23 people on it, they know that they have to allocate a certain number of coaches for that lesson," he said.

Hughes said that staff can now easily let the school know their availability which is crucial as surf schools have lots of students working part-time over summer.

“Our surf schools can now see when staff are available and roster shifts that suit saving lots of time and hassle,” he said.

In addition, clients can book their surf or SUP session via any of the school’s websites.

Hughes added that the integration of Ento with Rezgo means Surfing Australia and its affiliate surf schools have eliminated the need for double entries.

“We have one simple login, all staff details are in one place, which makes it easy and fast to manage rostering, payroll and bookings,” he said.

This will be crucial during the summer season when demand for lessons is at its peak, he said.
