ANZ poaches Google Australia chief for digital banking role

Maile Carnegie to lead digital transformation at bank

Google’s managing director for Australia and New Zealand, Maile Carnegie, has left the search giant to head up digital banking at ANZ.

Carnegie joined Google in mid-2013, after a stint heading up Procter & Gamble’s Australian and New Zealand operations.

“Digital banking is at the heart of our strategy to create a superior experience for our customers and our people,” ANZ CEO Shayne Elliott said in a statement.

“We have a great digital foundation with applications such as GoMoney and FastPay and the
recent redevelopment of anz.com,” the CEO said.

“Maile’s appointment recognises that digital is central to driving revenue growth and to successfully competing in a changing and disrupted environment where technology and brand are key sources of differentiation.”

The bank announced in January that it was seeking an external candidate to fill a new position of group executive, digital banking, and lead the bank’s digital transformation.

The announcement was part of a restructure of the bank’s senior leadership team unveiled by Elliott.

ANZ late last year rolled out a refreshed Internet banking platform.

In Australia, the bank reported a 30 per cent jump in sales via digital channels in FY15.

Australian transactions via digital channels increased by 10 per cent during the year, and have increased by 39 per cent since 2012.

“Part of Maile’s role will also be to shift our thinking and champion a group-wide innovation culture at ANZ based on developing and attracting service-focused, technology-literate, innovative and experimental people and teams. This includes being the sponsor of a new Digital Business Transformation Leadership Program created jointly by ANZ and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,” Elliott said.

Carnegie takes up her new role at ANZ in July.

The bank last year established an ‘International Technology and Digital Business Advisory Panel’ to offer advice to the bank’s board on digital business.
