Square has officially launched its mobile payment system, Square Reader, in Australia.
The $19 Square Reader plugs into the headphone jack of Android and iOS devices, enabling businesses to accept credit card payments.
The point-of-sale system is designed for SMBs. Merchants are charged 1.9 per cent per transaction.
The Square Reader has previously launched in the US, Canada and Japan.
In Australia, the Square Reader is backed by payment processor Cuscal.
“With the launch of Square Reader in Australia, we’re empowering local sellers with the tools they need to start, run, and grow their businesses,” Square CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey said in a statement. Dorsey is also the CEO and co-founder of Twitter.
“Our launch in Australia is an important step for our company and an exciting moment for a market so committed to innovation and an entrepreneurial small business community.”
Accounting SaaS provider Xero said that it had integrated Square Reader support with its dashboard for Australian customers.
