Uber to trial in-car Wi-Fi

Ridesharing company partners with Optus

In-car Wi-Fi will be available in 100 Uber vehicles in Sydney and Melbourne as part of a trial conducted in conjunction with Optus.

Internet connectivity using the telco’s 4G network will be available to passengers in the vehicles.

The trial is part of a broader partnership between the telco and the ridesharing service that was announced today.

Optus employees will be able to use Uber for business travel as part of the agreement between the two companies.

“Recognising that online access is a critical component of the Uber experience, we are offering exclusive offers to both drivers and passengers to access the fast and reliable Optus Network while they are in transit,” said Optus’ director, local markets, Steve Long.

Uber launched in Australia in April 2014.

In December last year the service said that it had more than 20,000 active drivers in the country.

Although the company faced a number of regulatory setbacks when it first launched, including a government raid on its Sydney office and drivers facing hefty fines, a number of Australian jurisdictions have moved to regulate Uber-style services. They include the ACT, Western Australia, and New South Wales.
