Windows users running Apple’s QuickTime are being advised to uninstall the program after the discovery of a number of Zero day vulnerabilities.
The Windows app has not had an update pushed since January and researchers from IT security company, Trend Micro, have published a blog post advising windows users of the app to uninstall it immediately.
According to the post, there are two reasons for this call to action. First, Apple is effectively killing QuickTime for Microsoft Windows.
It will no longer be issuing security updates for the product on the Windows Platform and recommend users uninstall it. This does not apply to QuickTime on Mac OSX.
Additionally, Trend’s Zero Day Initiative has released two advisories detailing two new, critical vulnerabilities affecting QuickTime for Windows.
These were released in accordance with the Zero Day Initiative’s Disclosure Policy for when a vendor does not issue a security patch for a disclosed vulnerability.
Due to the fact that Apple is no longer providing security updates for QuickTime on Windows, these vulnerabilities are never going to be patched, the post said.
The post went on to say it was not aware of any attacks on the vulnerabilities till now but added the only way to protect against potential attacks is to uninstall the program.
