SAP seeks entry to govt’s secure cloud services list

SAP begins offering HANA through a Canberra-based private cloud; announces first customer

SAP has commissioned IRAP assessment of a newly launched private cloud with an eye to having it added to the government’s list of secure services that are pre-certified for adoption by Commonwealth agencies.

SAP announced today that it had signed the first customer for its new Canberra-based SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud.

The infrastructure for the new cloud offering is now in place, and the federal Shared Services Centre will go live on the service in mid-June, SAP said.

HANA is SAP's in-memory database system.

The new service is hosted by Canberra Data Centres, with infrastructure provided by HP Enterprise.

SAP is undertaking IRAP assessment with the aim of joining the Certified Cloud Services List (CCSL) maintained by the Australian Signals Directorate.

The CCSL’s purpose is to make it quicker and easier for government organisations to adopt cloud services.

Services already on the list include Microsoft's Azure platform and Office 365, Amazon Web Services' EBS, EC2, S3 and Virtual Private Cloud services, Macquarie Telecom’s GovZone cloud service, and cloud offerings from Sliced Tech and Vault Systems.

“We are currently working through IRAP assessments for the cloud service,” said SAP Australia’s executive general manager for public services, Damien Bueno.

“The service that we’ll provide will be assessed at Unclassified but our intent is to have a Protected-level service for our government customers before the end of calendar 2016.”

Bueno said there had been significant interest from agencies in migrating to the new cloud service.

“We’ve gotten interest from a number of agencies, some who are looking at moving their on-premise deployments into our private and managed cloud,” he said.

In addition there are a number of “larger scale” customers interested in moving some non-production workloads into a cloud service, he said.
