Government prepares to unveil $231.1m cyber security strategy

Details of funding revealed ahead of strategy’s release later today

The government will today publicly release its long-awaited cyber security strategy. The strategy, details of which will be released at midday, includes initiatives worth $233.1 million over four years.

The funding is in addition to the $300 million the government has earmarked for Defence cyber security capabilities. Yesterday the government also revealed it would spend $61.1 million on improving ASIC's data analytics capabilities.

The cyber security strategy funding will include $38.8 million to establish a new facility for the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) to boost its growth and increase opportunities for partnerships with the private sector.

The government will look to significantly increase the capabilities of CERT Australia through a $21.5 million funding boost as well as $10 million for awareness raising programs and $2 million for a program focussed on non-government partners.

The government will also put $47.3 million towards establishing joint cyber threat sharing centres and an online threat sharing portal and creating national voluntary good practice guidance for cyber security ($1.6 million).

The Australian Federal Police and the Australian Crime Commission will receive $20.4 million and $16 million, respectively, to boost the government’s investigation and intelligence capabilities.

The Australian Signals Directorate will also receive additional funding under the strategy: $1.3 million for a rolling program that will assess the cyber security of government agencies and $11 million to boost the ability to uncover security vulnerabilities in government systems.

Two initiatives will be funded under the government’s National Innovation and Science Agenda: Establishing a national cyber security innovation network through the previously announced Cyber Security Growth Centre ($30.5 million) and boost Data61’s cyber security program ($7.5 million).

The strategy also allocates $3.5 million to establishing academic centres of cyber security excellence and programs to increase numbers of cyber security professionals in Australia.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade will receive $6.7 million to boost cyber security in the Indo-Pacific region.
