Telstra invests in Nginx

Telstra Ventures takes stake in the custodians of the open source Nginx web server

Telstra’s VC arm, Telstra Ventures, has made a strategic investment in San Francisco-based Nginx, best known for its eponymous open source web server software.

Telstra Ventures managing director Mark Sherman said Telstra was interested in working with Nginx to improve customer experience and help customers “embrace more software-defined application services”.

“When you look under the hood of many of the most popular websites around the world today you find Nginx’s technology,” Sherman said in a statement.

“This business continues to grow their share of the web server market and has compelling value-add propositions to sell.”

“Nginx provides a popular application delivery platform, which is renowned for its load balancing capabilities, high performance, security, and scale, and is in use on more than 140 million sites worldwide,” he said.

“They consistently deliver improved capabilities and performance for video heavy sites, and sites experiencing high traffic volumes.”

Telstra’s move will help Nginx expand its reach in Australia and the Asia Pacific, Nginx CEO Gus Robertson said.

“We are looking forward to working with them to bring our technology solutions to companies across the region,” he said.
