Optus has begun offering voice calling over 4G, the telco announced today.
Optus has begun rolling out Voice over LTE — VoLTE — to postpaid and SMB customers in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.
VoLTE allows voice calls to be made without the handset having to drop back to a 3G connection, slowing down any data transfers that are taking place.
“We’ve been testing and tweaking VoLTE for the best customer experience and we’re excited Optus customers will start to see the benefits of this technology on our 4G Plus network,” acting managing director, Optus Networks, Dennis Wong, said in a statement.
Telstra begin switching on VoLTE in September. Vodafone late last year began moving its customers to VoLTE.
Optus said that initially VoLTE will be available to customers using the Samsung Galaxy S7 or Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge handsets.
“Optus will continue to add capability to other devices and remains focused on expanding our VoLTE footprint to further locations, particularly in regional Australia,” Wong said.
