NT to spend $185.9m on health ICT overhaul

Budget funds Core Clinical Systems Renewal Program

The Northern Territory government has earmarked $185.9 million over five years for its ambitious overhaul of health ICT, the Core Clinical Systems Renewal Program (CCSRP).

The program involves replacing four clinical information systems with a single end-to-end system for public health services and implementing an NT-wide, real-time health electronic record system.

The CCSRP is the largest ICT overhaul in the Territory’s history, according to the government. The spending was announced today as part of the NT government’s 2016-17 budget.

The rollout will cover all of the NT’s public hospitals and more than 50 clinics.

“For the first time clinicians will be able to electronically access patient records from any public health care facility, anywhere in the Territory,” NT’s minister for corporate and information services, Peter Styles, said in a statement.

“The program will transform our public health care network meaning clinicians will no longer need to re-assess a patient’s history each time they visit a Territory public health service,” health minister John Elferink said.

“Immediate access to patient records will improve the delivery of health care for Territorians through reduced re-admissions, reduced emergency department waiting times and improved patient safety.”

Last year’s NT budget included $10 million for planning, analysis and market testing related to the program.
