NT government funds police tech upgrades

Budget includes funding for phase two of facial recognition trial, PROMIS overhaul

The Northern Territory government will fund the rollout of body-worn video cameras for NT police and the second phase of a trial of facial recognition technology.

The NT 2016-17 budget, handed down today, also earmarks $1.64 million for replacing the Territory’s speed camera and infringement system, POLCAM, and the SaFER firearm licensing and registration system.

The government has set aside $2 million for the body cam rollout, while $570,000 has been earmarked for the second phase of the facial recognition system trial in the NT.

The facial recognition system is based on NEC NeoFace Reveal technology. During the first phase of the trial, police used the system to identify around 300 people from photos and CCTV footage.

The government also announced it would spend $2.9 million over three years on stabilisation and business system transformation of the Police Real‑time Management Information System (PROMIS) and $0.38 million for an electronic rostering system.

In addition, $12.6 million will be spent over three years to upgrade ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio equipment and infrastructure employed by emergency services to the 400MHz spectrum.

“We’re investing in technology including body-worn cameras and facial recognition to give frontline police the tools they need,” said the NT’s chief minister and minister for police and emergency services, Adam Giles.
