Tas govt seeks to boost state's STEM skills

Backs Code Club, GovHack

The Tasmanian government’s 2016-17 budget includes funding for a number of initiatives intended to boost the development of ICT skills in the state.

The government has earmarked $900,000 over four years for its innovation, ICT and science agenda.

Initiatives funded include continuing a partnership with Code Club, which teaches ICT-related stills in primary skills.

The state will fund training courses for teachers to participate in the program, including implementing an online training system. The government said it will also conduct a pilot involving TAFE and university students acting as coding mentors.

The government said it will also fund a pilot TasICT’s ‘Generations’ guest lecture program.

“We are also pleased to continue sponsorship of GovHack, an international annual event where participants use government data sets to find innovative ways to represent and reuse the data for the benefit of the community,” said a statement issued by Tasmania’s minister for IT and innovation, Michael Ferguson,

“By participating in GovHack and collaborating with external information users, we can gain a better appreciation of the value of Government data for innovative business and community uses.”

“Government investments in ICT will continue to encourage innovation and emerging business opportunities, which represents more jobs for Tasmanians,” the statement said.
