Queensland government unveils $225 million innovation spend

The Queensland government will earmark an additional $225 million for its innovation program in the state’s 2016-17 budget

The Queensland government will earmark an additional $225 million for its innovation program in the state’s 2016-17 budget.

“We have turned our $180 million Advance Queensland innovation and jobs plan into a $405 million whole-of-government innovation agenda, to help create the jobs of the future,” Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said in a statement issued ahead of the Queensland budget.

The budget will be handed down this afternoon.

The additional funding includes $10 million for a Platform Technology Program.

“We will also invest $10 million to develop new platform technologies for business, in areas like drones, big data and the internet of things,” the premier said.

The funding package includes:

  • $22.7 million for Advancing Small Business Queensland Strategy
  • $10 million for Platform Technology Program
  • $6 million for Regional Innovation Hubs
  • $10 million for Cairns Innovation Centre
  • $33.5 million for Advance Queensland: Connecting with Asia – tourism jobs in the regions package
  • $3.9 million for New Agricultural Economy
  • $40 million for Advance Queensland Industry Attraction Fund
  • $9 million for Industry Accelerators
  • $19.7 million for Queensland Biofutures 10-year Roadmap and Action Plan
  • $35 million for Integrated Healthcare Fund
  • $25 million for Clinical Genomics Service
  • $7.1 million for Global schools
  • $3.3 million for Schools for the Future
