Labor promises to fund Trove

Opposition says it will earmark funding for the National Library of Australia’s Trove search engine

Labor has pledged that if elected it will fund the National Library of Australia’s Trove program.

Trove offers free access to a range of digitised historical material including books, images, newspapers, music and maps.

Currently the project searches across more than 495 million pieces of content.

Budget cuts at the library led to a major review of services by the organisation.

“The Abbott-Turnbull Government has stripped $37 million from our national institutions, including the National Library, National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery and the National Archives of Australia,” said a statement released by shadow arts minister Mark Dreyfus.

“As a result of the nearly $6 million cut from the National Library, it has no longer been able to provide staffing to add new content to Trove.”

Labor said it would earmark $3 million a year over four years for Trove.
